The Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design welcomes you in April to the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the architectural practice, Richard and Dion Neutra, Architects and Associates and its derivative Dion Neutra Architecture. Special honored guests: Provost Dr. Jose Martin (University of Texas, Brownsville), Dr. Thomas Morales, Provost Cal Poly Pomona, photographer Julius Shulman and others.

YOU ARE INVITED! ENJOY NEUTRA INTERIORS AND LIVING TRENDS IN OUR FRIENDLY TOUR. Saturday, April 8, 1:00-5:00 PM. Mark your calendar and reserve your place now! Space is limited. We anticipate a half dozen Neutra Interiors (also called the Neutra Colony) on the tour including a last chance to see the Treetops Townhouse complex in its current form threatened with potential destruction by the forces of the City bureaucracy [See Treetops News]. Due to privacy issues, please remember that no photos of residential interiors are allowed during the tours. Come prepared to walk through with your shoes in hand if it rains to prevent damage to rooms. We regret that the home tour has many steps and is not handicap accessible. All tour locations you will visit are within a walking distance at a moderate pace. To pick up your tour map, we recommend you start at the Neutra Office Building (2379 Glendale Blvd). Other options are the VDL Research House (2300 Silver Lake Blvd) and 2440 Neutra Place. Each tour station has a check-in person and/or a docent for questions and answers. (See Question 4 of FAQ below where to park and Question 6 for driving directions).

THE SUPPLEMENTARY SYMPOSIUM of the Follow-on Generation for Saturday evening, April 8th, 6:30-9:30 PM, at Eagle Rock Recreation Center, will convene a group of architects or followers who are off-spring of architects. Among topics moderated by Dion Neutra will be the particular challenges of carrying on 'in the shadow' of a famous father or grand-father and what that means. Also discussed will be the views of this unique group on the state of preservation for the works of their dads and their ways of characterizing their memories of, and personalizing that famous person.
We must pause to pay our respects for Albert C. Martin Jr. the son of Al Sr, who founded that illustrious Martin firm even earlier than ours. Al passed [I got the relationships bolluxed for AC Martin] from us on March 30, which explains why his nephew Chris and his son David, who now head the firm could not participate. Our condolences to this family. This illustrates the importance of this event; the Follow-on Generation is now also getting older; who knows how much longer we may hear from them!

Throughout the Symposium, participants will explore the trends that started about 10 years ago, and now continues to gain momentum with architecturally significant properties designed by famous modernist architects as stated by Los Angeles Times, New York Times and Forbes magazine. Why there is a real fascination with the Neutra era? Why people are not only buying into the architecture but also lifestyles and paying a premium? Participants who are committed include Eric Lloyd Wright, Mark Schindler, Finn Kappe, Emily Ain, Helena Arahuete of Lautner Associates, Lisa Niles, Carla Hartman Eames and Wallace Neff Jr.. THIS could well be the highlight of this unusual weekend.

This 'Chat' will be held at the Eagle Rock Recreation Center in an informal round table setting, with video coverage. We expect to serve some light refreshment as this progresses. You may enjoy auditing this lively exchange of life experiences; recommended for, but not limited to investors, realtors, architects, contractors, designers, urban planners, new home owners, city officials and public members of neighborhood councils. Get to meet and network with this fascinating group!

AT THE NEUTRA EAGLE ROCK RECREATION CENTER. Reunion Sunday, April 9: Time: 2:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m. We'1l celebrate the firm's founding, as well as Richard and Dione (his wife) in honor of their 114th and 105th birthdays, respectively, at the Eagle Rock Recreation Center, (1100 Eagle Vista Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90041) and then later at the VDL Research House II in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles (2300 Silver Lake Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90039). Participants at Eagle Rock will enjoy a program consisting of a grand reunion of Neutra owners from far and wide and the establishment of a Neutra Fellowship for Preservation of what remains of the Neutra built legacy. Councilman Eric Garcetti's office will present a resolution passed by the City Council honoring 'Richard and Dion Neutra Weekend in L.A.'. Special Guest, Univ.of Texas Provost Dr. Jose Martin will speak on their project of restoration of the Kraigher house in Brownsville. There will be remarks by Dion Neutra, Cal Poly Pomona Provost Dr. Thomas D. Morales, Honorary AIA Julius Shulman, and others who had been a part in the key decades of the practice. Introduction of further honored guests, remarks by key attendees, sharing of experiences, and much more.

AT THE NEUTRA VDL RESEARCH HOUSE. VIP Reception. Sunday, April 9: Time: 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Enjoy an enchanting evening with lights, glamour and Neutra minimalist style in beautiful Silver Lake. The Institute will host an open-house at the Neutra VDL Research House, for a VIP reception featuring many of the above and more. The Dean of the School of Environmental Design (Pomona California State Polytechnic University), Karen Hanna will greet attendees and outline their outreach program to benefit the Research House, integrate with the community, reparation fund, tours, etc..We will further honor the founders, through whose philanthropy the University came to acquire this house. Light dinner and refreshments will be served at the evening event. Space is sharply limited, so reserve early while we can still accommodate you and the cameras! NOTE: Option 3 and 4 for the VIP Reception at the VDL Research House also allow attendance at the Eagle Rock afternoon event on Sunday 9th same day. All admission purchases are considered tax-deductible donations to the Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design and include a year membership and newsletter subscription in the Institute through April 2007. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

1) Would I get a ticket in the mail or email?
You should receive this confirmation in a email from PayPal. Bring your printed email notification from PayPal. No tickets will be mailed and sales are non-refundable. Your purchase will put you on a master list that will be held by a docent at the venue door. Because of volume, we will not be able to separately acknowledge Emails about ticket sales covered by these FAQ.

2) I purchased a ticket with the couple option. What do I do?
Not to worry; you've paid for two. Just show up at the door and announce the name under which the purchase was made. Please bring your printed email notification from PayPal. As you are checked off the list, you and your partner will be issued name tags which identify which event(s) you are registered for.

3) I failed to buy advance tickets. Can I purchase my admission at the door?
Yes, but prices go up this way. . A surcharge of $5 per person will be added to purchase admission tickets at the door, Saturday and Sunday afternoon, THERE WILL BE SPACE!. This service will be offered at all the respective events. You can pay with checks or cash but not credit cards. See Question 4 of FAQ for where to start.

4) Where do I park and start the tour?
Parking is either along Silver Lake Blvd. near 2300, or at the banks at Silverlake and Glendale (or on any streets to the South). For the Home Tour Saturday, go first either to the Research House at 2300 Silver Lake Blvd., 2440 Neutra Place, OR to the Neutra office Building at 2379 Glendale Blvd. to check in and pick up your map, then go for rest of the tour in walking distance from there. You should be able to complete the tour in 2 hours or less. For driving directions, see Question 6.

5) Do I need a separate ticket for the VIP reception?
Yes, you were supposed to purchase a separate advance ticket for the VIP event in order to combine it with the afternoon's event. HOWEVER as long as there is space, you can try purchasing a ticket for this evening event only at the VDL door! Chances are, that we can squeeze another few bodies in at the last minute.

6) Can I get some driving directions to the Neutra Convention?
Please read or print ALL the information in this page and make notes. Click the links to see a Yahoo! map and driving directions (look for the link 'To Here' in the Yahoo! map and click 'To Here' above the top of each map. Enter your address.) to Neutra Place, Eagle Rock Recreation Center and to the VDL Research House and Neutra Office Building. Print the maps and driving directions and bring copies with you.
