GETTYSBURG CYCLORAMA IN THE NEWS
World
Monuments Fund
World Monuments Fund is the foremost private, non-profit organization
dedicated to the preservation of historic art and architecture worldwide
through fieldwork, advocacy, grantmaking, education, and training. Every
other year, WMF publishes the World Monuments Watch list of 100 Most
Endangered Sites. The 2006 Watch List includes the Cyclorama Center
at Gettysburg, cited as a significant example of postwar architecture.
Dwell Magazine
The July/August 2005 issue of DWELL contains the following paragraph
about the Cyclorama Center on page 43:
" We may agree that age alone doesn't necessarily warrant preservation,
but we have no reservations getting huffy over the proposed destruction
of the Cyclorama. The only public Neutra building east of the Mississippi,
this mid-century design was built as a utopian homage to Lincoln on
the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. The National Park Service, however,
plans to destroy the curvilinear structure within the next year in favor
of a tourist-friendly (i.e., massive) visitors' center and parking lot.
You can help protect Neutra's building by signing this online petition.
