The final big event of Neutra-75 will be the celebration of Dion Neutra at
his own 75th birthday! As of this writing, the venue is set to be the Eagle
Rock Recreation Center at 1100 Eagle Vista Drive, Eagle Rock, CA. This affair
will feature selected speakers familiar with the life of Dion, who have
signed up in advance to contribute their remarks. If you think you qualify
and would like to participate, please get in touch.

We hope to feature a catered dinner by Fred Eric, chef of Fred 62 and Vida;
famed restaurants here in L.A. Donation $20/person. We'll soon have a Paypal
button on the home page of the website for you to order your tix. For new
members, we'll throw in membership for the rest of fiscal 2001 as part of
your donation. If you have a preference for entrée; drop us an E and we'll
try to accommodate as we plan the final menu. We're going to try to update
the website to allow people to choose there as well.

As mentioned, we are still formulating the format for this on-line Zine se
ries and are positing the following departments:

Letters you are invited to write in and express your opinions; some may be
published. Again, address these to CrosonC2aol.com.

Status of Neutra Projects Report on the latest on the several projects which
are being preserved or addressed by Institute action. Included here will also
be losses.  Send a support letter for Gettysburg. Just to keep the pressure
on. Our latest idea on this one is to create a NPR piece by way of
interesting a TV Newsmagazine to pick this up. Also visit our 'Demolition
Derby' page on the website. This is in development, so stay tuned.

I sadly have to report the loss of our 8-story La Veta Medical building in
Orange [Taschen P. 441], which I just learned last weekend was torn down some
months ago without fanfare, opposition or concern. A photo of its vacant site
is part of the show in Santa Ana. Can anyone tell us what the reason for this
was? Why was no one given a chance to see if it could be saved?

The demolition of the last reflection pool at the Orange County Courthouse
was the subject of a Sat. July 7 cover story in the LA Times Orange County
edition, to which I wrote a letter to Editor asking why I wasn't consulted
before making this kind of decision. Again, this one is not lost yet; write
your Orange County supervisor!

The Von Huene Cabin in Mammoth, which is capable of moving, is threatened
with demolition. If any one knows of a vacant site in Mammoth, that would be
the easiest, but I believe this structure, which is about the size of a
trailer module, could be moved down the highway as well. Contact us here if
you have ideas. Wouldn't it be great NOT to have to repeat what happened with
the von Sternberg house, featured in the July issue of Architectural Digest?

News Flash: Just as we are going to press, I received an E-mail from over the
transom telling me that my search of 30 years might be over! A teen-age boy
shot some super-8 footage of the destruction of the von Sternberg house in
progress! I hope to view a tape of this tomorrow! Stay tuned on this one.

'Traveling Exhibition' The View from Inside Show

You can view this show NOW in person until August 15!  They announce a Panel
Discussion there on Thursday, August 16, at 10:00AM 'Neutra and advanced
architecture in historic districts'. Call for details and participants.

125 N. Broadway  Suite A, Santa Ana, CA. The phone Number there is 714 567
7234. Well worth it; the ambiance is quite amazing! Plan to have a meal while
there.

How to get bookings; augment the exhibition with models, what else can be
done to enhance this show? I'm told there is a big story in the LA Times of
today, on this.
